Karen Eicker - Managing Director - Apex Information Systems
“Karen Eicker A Visionary in Digital Communication”
Karen Eicker, Managing Director at Apex Information Systems, found her passion for digital communications early in her career. With a background in corporate architecture, she honed her expertise as a graduate of the Wits School of Architecture & Planning. Over the past two decades, her insights and thought leadership have shaped discussions in South Africa’s premier publications covering the built environment and infrastructure. Her excellence in journalism was recognized when she was awarded the SAPOA Property Feature Journalist of the Year in 2010.
Karen represents a generation of women entrepreneurs who have had to carve their own paths in industries traditionally dominated by men. She remains committed to inspiring younger women to believe in their abilities, assert themselves, and challenge outdated norms where necessary.
Throughout her journey, Karen has benefited from the generosity of mentors who believed in her potential, offering guidance and opportunities. Now, she actively pays that support forward, particularly to the women she collaborates with, fostering an environment of empowerment and growth.
Innovating Communication Across Industries
Apex Information Systems was founded to bridge a gap in the market, initially focusing on specialized web development and communication services for professionals in architecture, engineering, and the built environment. Over time, its reach has expanded into diverse sectors, including nature conservation.
“We work with innovators and thought leaders who are reshaping their industries,” Karen shares. “Their insights challenge and inspire me daily. Every project is a learning opportunity.”
Under Karen’s leadership, Apex combines innovation, technical acumen, and a commitment to realizing clients’ visions. The company specializes in strategic communication, brand management, web development, multimedia content creation, writing, editing, and digital marketing—crafting tailored campaigns that make a lasting impact.
Balancing Leadership and Personal Growth
Throughout her career, Karen has faced the challenge of managing demanding workloads and responsibilities. Over time, she recognized the necessity of setting boundaries to protect her energy and well-being. “Founding Apex Information Systems was part of this transformative journey,” she reflects. “I wanted to create a work environment that supports both productivity and personal wellness. A bright, comfortable space with access to nature and nourishing food has become an essential part of my daily life.”
Karen has also experienced moments of professional isolation and high-pressure situations. “These moments have been pivotal in my growth,” she says. “They’ve taught me to set firm boundaries, improve my communication, and foster meaningful collaborations.”
From Architecture to Leadership and Impact
Reflecting on her career evolution, Karen explains, “Studying architecture required focus and determination, and transitioning into writing was a bold but rewarding step. That journey ultimately led me to where I am today.”
One of her career highlights was leading a resource-constrained but dedicated team—primarily composed of remarkable women—to successfully organize the International Union of Architects (UIA) World Congress in Durban in 2014. This milestone exemplifies the power of collaboration, resilience, and shared vision.
At the core of her motivation is a drive to create positive change. “I’ve always been passionate about challenging established systems,” she says. “Most of my projects have been fueled by a desire to promote sustainable and regenerative practices for both people and the planet.”
In her current role, Karen focuses on client relations, business development, and project management. Her expertise lies in translating complex technical information into compelling narratives that resonate with a broader audience, ensuring alignment between her clients’ objectives and meaningful storytelling.
People-Centered Leadership
Karen’s leadership is rooted in openness, collaboration, and appreciation for hard work. She is intentional about fostering an environment where team members feel valued and empowered.
“Even the smallest gesture of encouragement can have a profound impact on someone’s career,” she notes. “I prioritize surrounding myself with talented individuals who share our company’s vision and make sure they know their contributions are appreciated.”
She believes in leveraging each person’s unique strengths, granting team members autonomy while providing guidance and support. Apex promotes a flexible work culture, encouraging remote work and prioritizing self-care.
A Philosophy of Success and Resilience
Karen’s daily routine begins with 15 to 45 minutes of yoga—a non-negotiable practice that helps her maintain focus and composure. “Entrepreneurship demands resilience, discipline, and the ability to navigate stress,” she observes. “These qualities are cultivated over time through consistent effort.”
Her motivation comes from engaging in intellectually stimulating work within a constantly evolving landscape. She draws immense inspiration from the women she collaborates with—clients, colleagues, and friends—who are striving to build something meaningful while balancing personal well-being and professional success.
Empowering Future Women Leaders
Karen’s advice to aspiring women leaders is simple yet powerful: “Don’t hesitate to ask questions. A seemingly simple question can open the door to new insights and opportunities.”
She credits mentorship as a crucial element in her own success. “Having mentors who genuinely believed in me gave me the confidence to take bold steps. I encourage women to seek guidance, whether from a colleague, friend, or business coach. Many of us have faced similar challenges—support is out there; you just have to reach for it.”
Karen Eicker continues to pave the way for women in business, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and empowerment—one meaningful project at a time.
